What it does

As this artifact enters, choose an opponent.

At the beginning of the chosen player's upkeep, this artifact deals X damage to that player, where X is 3 minus the number of cards in their hand.

Invented in Mishra's earlier days, the Rack was once his most feared creation.

Provenance

Where it came from

The Rack was originally released as part of the Alpha set in 1993, representing the early experimental era of Magic: The Gathering. As an artifact that penalizes players for having cards in their hand, it became a cornerstone for 'discard' style decks, reflecting the game's initial design philosophy of including punishing, high-interaction cards that could drastically shift the tempo of a match.

The Summer Magic version, often referred to by collectors as the Edgar set due to a misprint on the wrapper, was a limited production run intended as a correction for the Revised Edition. Because of a widespread recall, these cards are among the rarest in the game's history. The artwork, credited to Christopher Rush, features a grim, medieval torture device that perfectly captures the darker, visceral aesthetic prominent in the game's earliest illustrations.
