What it does

As this artifact enters, choose an opponent.

At the beginning of the chosen player's upkeep, this artifact deals X damage to that player, where X is 3 minus the number of cards in their hand.

Invented in Mishra's earlier days, the Rack was once his most feared creation.

Provenance

Where it came from

The Rack first appeared in the Antiquities expansion of Magic: The Gathering in 1994, designed by Christopher Rush. It was conceived during a period when the game's mechanics were rapidly expanding, introducing artifacts that punished players for having small hands. The design sought to pressure opponents to maintain a full hand of cards, creating a distinctive psychological and strategic dynamic that favored control-oriented playstyles.

When reprinted in the Revised Edition, the card retained its iconic illustration by Rush, which depicts a medieval torture device meant to emphasize the card's theme of constriction and lingering damage. Its inclusion in Revised ensured its place in the early core game ecosystem, where it became a cornerstone for 'discard' decks. It was well-received by players for its efficiency and its unique role in disrupting the traditional tempo of early competitive formats.
