Provenance

Where it came from

Ivory Tower was first introduced in the Antiquities expansion for Magic: The Gathering in 1994, designed by Richard Garfield to emphasize the value of maintaining a large hand size. It was later reprinted in the Revised Edition, which served as the third core set for the game and acted as the primary way for players to acquire early cards after the initial Limited Edition releases went out of print.

The card’s illustration was created by artist Quinton Hoover, who was known for his distinctively romantic and ornate style. The design aimed to visually represent the concept of a sanctuary for one's thoughts, reflected in the mechanical function of the card granting life points based on the number of cards in hand. While the Antiquities version remains the original source, the Revised Edition inclusion made this piece a staple for deck-building in the mid-1990s competitive scene.
