Where it came from
The Royal Scions card was released as part of the Secret Lair Drop Series, a specialized line from Wizards of the Coast that features curated, art-focused reprints of Magic: The Gathering cards. Originally debuting in the Throne of Eldraine expansion, this specific variant was highlighted in a 2020 drop to showcase unique, stylized interpretations of iconic planeswalker characters. It serves as a visual celebration of Rowan and Will Kenrith, the twin protagonists of the Eldraine narrative arc, emphasizing their dual nature as magically gifted siblings.
The artistic direction for this release drew upon diverse stylistic influences to differentiate it from standard set printings, often employing guest artists to reinterpret existing lore. By moving away from the traditional, rigid visual language of standard card sets, this version aimed to provide a collector-focused aesthetic that appealed to players interested in the intersection of fantasy illustration and graphic design. The release was well-received by collectors who prioritize high-fidelity art and limited-run production within the broader card game ecosystem.
