Where it came from
The Stasis Coffin was released as part of the promotional suite for The Brothers' War, a 2022 expansion set for Magic: The Gathering that revisited the iconic conflict between Urza and Mishra. This card specifically depicts an artifact of immense power from the lore, designed to preserve life or state through temporal suspension. The card was issued in a special retro-frame treatment, intended to evoke the aesthetic of the game's early 1990s origins while functioning within modern gameplay mechanics.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, a long-standing contributor to the game known for his atmospheric and emotionally resonant style. His design for the Stasis Coffin emphasizes the cold, clinical isolation of the device through muted lighting and intricate, mechanical detailing. Upon release, the promo was well-received by collectors who favor the classic frame design, serving as both a functional tool for deck builders and a piece of visual storytelling that honors the deep history of the franchise's overarching narrative.
