Where it came from
The Thran Spider, specifically the retro frame treatment from The Brothers' War Promos, was released in 2022 as part of a nostalgic homage to Magic: The Gathering's history. The card draws heavily on the lore of the Thran Empire, a highly advanced civilization from the game's earliest narrative arcs, and features the distinctive aesthetic of the original 1990s card frames to evoke the sentimentality of the game's early years.
The artwork for this particular printing was crafted to reflect the mechanical and ancient nature of Thran technology, rendered with a gritty, industrial precision that defines the Artificer aesthetic. It was designed to appeal to both long-time collectors who appreciate the callback to the game's origins and modern players who value the specific card frame's tactile, vintage appeal. Reception was largely positive among players who favored the set's focus on the deep, foundational mythos of the franchise.
