Thermal Blast was released in 2001 as part of the Odyssey expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, the set marked a narrative pivot for the game, shifting the focus to a new storyline centered on the plane of Otaria. The card was designed as a common-rarity red sorcery, intended to provide players with a straightforward, scaling damage effect that rewards the use of threshold, a mechanic introduced in this set that grants additional power to cards when a player has seven or more cards in their graveyard.

The card features original illustration by artist Carl Critchlow, whose distinct, jagged aesthetic defined many cards throughout the early 2000s.
