Where it came from
Thing in the Ice was originally released in the 2016 Magic: The Gathering expansion Shadows over Innistrad. The set returned to the fan-favorite gothic horror plane of Innistrad, focusing on themes of transformation and madness. This specific version, numbered 92s, is a promotional iteration featuring alternate artwork by Johann Bodin, designed to showcase the card's dual-faced mechanics where a seemingly innocuous block of ice transitions into the terrifying Awoken Horror.
The design intent behind the card was to capture the classic horror trope of something monstrous hidden in plain sight. Johann Bodin’s interpretation emphasizes the claustrophobic tension of the creature trapped within the ice, a departure from the main set's standard art. Upon its release, the card was widely praised by the competitive community for its unique efficiency and board-clearing potential, quickly becoming a staple in various constructed formats.
