Three Visits was originally printed in the Portal Three Kingdoms set in 1999, designed to introduce Magic: The Gathering to the East Asian market by utilizing themes and narratives from the historical Chinese epic of the same name. The card depicts a classic anecdote regarding Liu Bei’s persistent attempts to recruit the strategist Zhuge Liang, fitting the set’s focus on legendary figures and political maneuvering. Its design as a green sorcery that searches for a Forest card is mechanically significant, serving as a functional equivalent to the staple card Nature’s Lore.

The card saw a massive surge in popularity and market value during the mid-2010s due to its efficiency in the Commander format, where players prize cards that fetch specific land types untapped. This demand eventually led to its inclusion in the 2020 Commander Legends set, where it featured new, updated artwork by illustrator Chris Rahn. Rahn’s rendition maintained the regal, historical aesthetic of the original while providing a modernized visual style that resonated with contemporary players, helping the card become a cornerstone of green-based decks.
