Fact or Fiction

Fact or Fiction was originally printed in the 2001 Invasion expansion and became a staple of blue-aligned spellcasting due to its ability to generate card advantage while forcing opponents into difficult decision-making scenarios. Its inclusion in Commander Legends, released in 2020, marked a return for the card in a set specifically designed for the multiplayer Commander format. This version features new artwork by Johann Bodin, who opted for a more painterly, ethereal interpretation of the classic split-pile mechanic.

The design of Fact or Fiction is lauded for its unique interaction between players, as the caster reveals the top five cards of their library and splits them into two piles, while an opponent chooses which pile the caster receives. This creates a psychological layer of gameplay where the caster must gauge their opponent's threat assessment. The Commander Legends printing was well-received by the community for retaining the card's functional elegance while updating the aesthetic to match the thematic high-fantasy tone of the set.
