Where it came from
Thundering Raiju was introduced in the 2022 Magic: The Gathering expansion Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty. As a card within the 'Neon Dynasty Promos' set, this specific version features unique frame treatments that reflect the set's thematic blend of traditional Japanese mythology and high-tech cyberpunk aesthetics. The creature itself is based on the Raiju, a legendary beast from Japanese folklore said to be the companion or manifestation of lightning, repurposed here as a powerful combat-focused card.
The card’s visual identity was crafted to capture the neon-drenched, futuristic atmosphere of the plane of Kamigawa. Illustrators for the set focused on dynamic, high-energy designs to match the creature's aggressive in-game mechanics. Upon release, the card saw immediate adoption in competitive play for its ability to deal consistent damage, quickly becoming a staple in red-aligned decks and a notable example of the creative direction taken during Wizards of the Coast's return to the Kamigawa setting.
