Where it came from
Thundering Raiju was introduced in the 2022 Magic: The Gathering expansion Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty. The set marked a return to the plane of Kamigawa, shifting the aesthetic from traditional Japanese folklore to a high-tech, cyberpunk-infused future. The creature represents a neon-lit, digitized take on the traditional Raiju, a lightning beast from Japanese mythology, serving as a powerful aggressive centerpiece for red-aligned decks during the set's release.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Titus Lunter, who utilized the set’s distinct palette of vibrant neons and deep shadows to depict the creature in motion. The design focuses on the creature's electrical essence, emphasizing the synergy between magic and technology that defined the set's flavor. Upon its release, the card was widely recognized by competitive players for its efficiency and ability to distribute damage, becoming a staple in standard formats throughout its time in rotation.
