Where it came from
Thundering Raiju was introduced in the 2022 Magic: The Gathering set Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty, a release that reimagined the lore-heavy plane of Kamigawa through a futuristic, cyberpunk-inspired lens. The card features a distinct showcase 'neon' frame, a stylistic choice intended to emphasize the set's technological aesthetic. This specific promo version, identified by the collector number 166p, was distributed through promotional channels to celebrate the set's release and highlight the unique visual direction of the expansion.
The creature was illustrated by artist Wisnu Tan, who crafted the image of a spirit-wolf surging with kinetic energy. The design intent was to capture the essence of a 'Raiju'—a legendary Japanese spirit associated with lightning—by blending traditional mythological motifs with the vibrant, electrified atmosphere of the Neon Dynasty setting. Upon its debut, the card was well-received by players for its aggressive combat utility, quickly becoming a staple in red-aligned decks and a favored collectible for fans of the set's unique art direction.
