What it does

Counter target spell. Choose 1, 2, or 3 at random. Its controller mills that many cards, then exiles cards from the top of their library until they exile a nonland card with a different name than that spell. They may cast that card without paying its mana cost. Then they put the exiled cards on the bottom of their library in a random order.

Provenance

Where it came from

Tibalt's Trickery was released in 2021 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set Kaldheim, a Norse-mythology-inspired expansion. The card depicts Tibalt, a sadistic planeswalker known for his chaotic and often unreliable magic. Mechanically, the card was designed to embody his unpredictable nature by allowing a player to counter a spell and replace it with a random card from the top of their library, a high-variance effect that quickly became a focal point for experimental deck building.

The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, who utilized a vivid, jagged style to capture the essence of Tibalt’s manipulative chaos. Upon release, the card gained significant notoriety in the Modern and Legacy formats. Players discovered that it could be used to bypass the mana costs of powerful spells, leading to a swift surge in competitive interest and widespread community debate regarding its design balance and impact on tournament play.
