Where it came from
The International Collectors' Edition (ICE) was released by Wizards of the Coast in 1993 as a non-tournament legal set designed to showcase the game's early artwork and mechanics to a broader audience. Featuring gold-bordered backs and square corners, these cards were sold as complete boxed sets, providing collectors with access to high-demand cards that were already becoming difficult to acquire due to the rapid growth of the game.
The Time Vault card itself is an iconic artifact from the game’s earliest days, originally illustrated by Mark Poole. His design captures a mystical, intricate containment vessel, reflecting the card's function as a high-risk, high-reward engine for additional turns. While the original tournament-legal versions are among the most sought-after cards in the hobby, the International Collectors' Edition print remains a significant historical artifact for those documenting the transition of the game from a regional hit to a global phenomenon.
