Where it came from
Time Vault was originally released in the 1993 Alpha set for Magic: The Gathering, designed by Richard Garfield and illustrated by Mark Tedin. It was conceived as a high-risk, high-reward artifact that allowed a player to take an extra turn at the cost of entering play tapped, a mechanic that quickly proved to be exceptionally powerful when paired with cards that could untap artifacts.
The Unlimited Edition version, released in 1993 as the game's first base set reprint, retained the original white-bordered aesthetic and Mark Tedin's surreal, intricate artwork. While the card's mechanics famously led to its long-term restriction or ban in many tournament formats due to its potential for infinite turn combinations, it remains a cornerstone of the game's early history and a prized artifact for collectors of the vintage Power Nine era.
