Time Warp

Time Warp was first introduced in the 1997 Tempest expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It was designed as a strategic sorcery spell that grants the player an additional turn, a powerful mechanic that harkens back to the game's earliest and most iconic spells from the 1993 Alpha set. The card was reprinted in the 1999 Starter set, which was designed as an accessible introductory product for new players, featuring a simplified frame and updated rules text to help ease beginners into the complex mechanics of the game.

The artwork for this version was commissioned from Pete Venters, a prolific illustrator whose work defined much of the aesthetic for Magic: The Gathering throughout the 1990s. Venters sought to capture the disorienting, cosmic nature of manipulating temporal flows, utilizing his signature detailed style to render the abstract concept of a time distortion. Within the competitive community, the card is widely respected for its utility, though its inclusion in the Starter set reflects its status as a foundational piece of the game's broader history rather than a variant restricted to expert-level expansions.
