What it does
At the beginning of each upkeep, each player exiles the top card of their library. The player who exiled the card with the greatest mana value takes an extra turn after this one. If two or more players' cards are tied for greatest, the tied players repeat this process until the tie is broken.

Where it came from
Timesifter was released in 2003 as part of the Mirrodin expansion, the first set in a block centered around a world forged entirely of metal. Mechanically, the card was designed to explore the concept of time manipulation within the context of Magic: The Gathering’s turn-based structure. It reflects the set's broader thematic focus on artifacts and high-variance, chaotic gameplay elements that alter the fundamental rules of engagement.
The card was illustrated by David Martin, who contributed a surreal, mechanical aesthetic that fits the artificial nature of Mirrodin. The design was intended to create a unique board state where the active player becomes unpredictable, effectively shifting the tempo of the game. Upon its debut, it was recognized primarily as a niche, fun-focused card for casual Commander formats rather than a staple in highly competitive tournament play.
