Where it came from
The Plains card from the 2003 Mirrodin set was crafted to immerse players in the unique aesthetic of a world composed entirely of metal. As part of the first set in the Mirrodin block, this land card was designed to depart from the traditional organic depiction of landscapes, instead presenting the concept of open space through the lens of a harsh, artificial environment.
The artwork for this specific card was rendered by artist Rob Alexander, who was tasked with conveying the vastness of the plane's scrublands. His contribution helped define the set's signature 'artifact-heavy' identity, with the design receiving praise for its ability to maintain the functional clarity required for gameplay while capturing the eerie, glistening metallic topography of the plane.
