Where it came from
This Island card was released as part of the War of the Spark set for Magic: The Gathering, which debuted in 2019. The set was designed to be the climactic conclusion to a multi-year narrative arc involving the interplanar conflict with the elder dragon Nicol Bolas. Unlike most standard basic lands, this particular card features art by Titus Lunter, who was commissioned to capture the atmospheric essence of the city-plane Ravnica, where the set's events take place.
The design of this land reflects the overarching aesthetic of War of the Spark, emphasizing the dense, vertical architecture of Ravnica under the threat of the planar invasion. Titus Lunter’s illustration focuses on the intersection of urban landscape and natural elements, aiming to ground the player in the specific setting of the block. Upon its release, the card was widely distributed in booster packs, serving as a functional utility piece that reinforced the thematic visual storytelling central to the set's immersive experience.
