Where it came from
Tobias, Doomed Conqueror was released in 2022 as part of the Dominaria United Commander set, a collection of preconstructed decks designed to celebrate the history of the Magic: The Gathering plane of Dominaria. The character Tobias Andrion is a deep-cut reference to the original Legends expansion from 1994, reimagining a classic, somewhat obscure character for the modern Commander format. The design leans into the thematic identity of the Benalish forces, utilizing white and blue mechanics to represent his tactical leadership and eventual tragic downfall.
The card illustration was crafted by artist Magali Villeneuve, who was tasked with depicting Tobias in a moment of martial gravitas. Villeneuve focused on a composition that emphasizes the weight of his command and the inevitable sorrow of his narrative arc within the lore. Upon release, the card was well-received by players interested in 'tribal' themes, specifically soldiers and knights, and it is frequently praised for successfully translating a vintage character into a balanced and flavorful modern card design.
