Hazezon, Shaper of Sand

Hazezon, Shaper of Sand was released in 2022 as part of the Dominaria United Commander set, which revisited the storied lore of the plane of Dominaria. The card serves as a mechanical homage to the original Hazezon Tamar from the 1994 Legends expansion, reimagining the character as a creature that manipulates the desert landscape to summon Sand Warrior tokens. This design choice was intended to update a classic, fan-favorite ability for the modern Commander format while rooting the card firmly in the flavor of the Naya shard, which focuses on land-based synergy and token generation.

The artwork for this iteration was crafted by artist Wisnu Tan, who emphasized the character's connection to the shifting sands and the harsh environment of his homeland. Tan employed a vibrant, sweeping style to convey the Shaper's mystical control over the dunes, aiming to capture both the authority and the elemental nature of the character. The card was received positively by the player base, largely because it provided a more accessible and flexible version of a legendary figure who had previously been difficult to build around due to his original color identity and casting restrictions.
