Where it came from
Tocasia, Dig Site Mentor was released in 2022 as part of The Brothers' War, a Magic: The Gathering expansion set that revisited the iconic lore of the franchise’s earliest history. The card depicts a central figure in the childhood of brothers Urza and Mishra, representing the archeologist who fostered their intellect and curiosity before the onset of the conflict that defined their lives. Her design reflects a mentor role, utilizing mechanics that emphasize card draw and artifact synergy to mirror the excavations she led in the deserts of Terisiare.
The card was illustrated by Magali Villeneuve, a renowned artist in the fantasy field who sought to convey both the academic rigor and the maternal influence Tocasia held over her young charges. The visual language of the card features a scholarly, weathered aesthetic consistent with the set's retro-industrial themes. It was received favorably by players and lore enthusiasts, particularly those interested in the deep history of Magic’s world-building, as it provided a face to a character who had been referenced in flavor text for decades but never previously appeared as a playable creature card.
