Where it came from
Urza, Prince of Kroog was released in the 2022 Magic: The Gathering set The Brothers' War, a thematic expansion revisiting the foundational lore of the franchise. The card depicts a younger, pre-ascension Urza during his tenure as a master artificer in the city of Kroog, emphasizing his role as an innovator before the onset of the catastrophic Brother's War against his sibling, Mishra.
The art was illustrated by Johannes Voss, whose stylistic approach sought to capture the character's intellectual ambition and the clockwork aesthetic of the setting. The card features a meld mechanic and a distinct visual design intended to evoke the mechanical complexity associated with Urza's early inventions, and it was generally well-received by players for its flavorful integration into the historical narrative of the game.
