Where it came from
Toothy, Imaginary Friend was released in June 2018 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion set Battlebond. The set was designed specifically for Two-Headed Giant gameplay, a cooperative multiplayer format, and centered around the themes of friendship and partnership. Toothy serves as a partner card to Pir, Imaginative Rascal, reflecting the set's mechanical emphasis on synergy and the lore of the plane of Kylem, a world obsessed with gladiatorial combat.
The card's art was created by illustrator Johann Bodin, who depicted Toothy as an abstract, ethereal entity standing beside its counterpart. The design captures the whimsical yet unsettling nature of an imaginary friend, utilizing a vibrant color palette to contrast with the creature's shifting, translucent form. Upon its debut, the card was well-received by players for its unique ability to grow through card draw and its role as a powerful engine in Commander format decks, where the partner mechanic allows for versatile deck-building strategies.
