Where it came from
Topsy Turvy was released in 2020 as part of the Unsanctioned boxed set for Magic: The Gathering. This set, which featured silver-bordered cards, was designed as a standalone, playable experience that leaned into the game's more chaotic and humorous history. Unlike standard expansion sets, these cards were intentionally crafted to break the traditional rules of the game, offering mechanics that encouraged unpredictability and whimsical interaction among players.
The card was illustrated by artist Matt Cavotta, a long-time contributor to the game whose work often carries a distinct, character-driven aesthetic. The design of Topsy Turvy focuses on the concept of temporal distortion, allowing players to manipulate the order of turns in a way that reflects the set's subversive theme. Upon its release, it was well-received by fans of the 'Un-' series for its ability to create memorable, albeit erratic, game states that deviate from the serious competitive environment of standard sets.
