Where it came from
Torgaar, Famine Incarnate was originally released as part of the Magic: The Gathering Game Night 2019 box set, a standalone product designed to introduce casual players to the game. It features a unique frame treatment specific to this release, setting it apart from its original appearance in the Dominaria expansion. The card was created as a high-impact legendary creature that showcases the black color identity's penchant for life-draining mechanics and sacrifice-based strategies.
The character, an avatar of the Cabal, was conceptualized by the Wizards of the Coast design team to represent the overwhelming, destructive power of famine. Its art, handled by artist Aleksi Briclot, emphasizes a terrifying, skeletal aesthetic that fits the dark, gothic themes of Dominaria. Upon its release, the card was well-received by commander players for its ability to drastically reset the pace of a game by reducing a player's life total to a static number.
