Where it came from
Torgaar, Famine Incarnate was released in 2018 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set Dominaria. The card was designed to represent a powerful avatar of the Cabal, a shadowy religious order deeply rooted in the lore of the Dominaria plane. The character functions as a mythic rare legendary creature, mechanically focused on themes of sacrifice and life-point reduction, mirroring the oppressive, life-draining nature of his thematic origin.
The artwork for Torgaar was illustrated by Aleksi Briclot, a long-time collaborator with Wizards of the Coast. Briclot's design emphasizes the character's sheer scale and grotesque, skeletal physiology, aiming to convey a sense of inevitable, world-consuming decay. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its high-impact gameplay design and its ability to serve as a formidable commander in the Commander format, effectively translating the bleak atmosphere of the Dominaria storyline into a tangible tactical asset.
