Where it came from
Torgaar, Famine Incarnate was released as part of the Dominaria set in 2018, marking the return of the legendary Elder Demon to the Magic: The Gathering narrative after a prolonged absence. The card was designed to embody the themes of desolation and cyclical consumption found within the plane’s history, specifically serving as a mechanical representation of the Cabal’s dark deity. This specific version, numbered 108s, was distributed as a promotional card, often awarded for participating in local game store events during the set's release window.
The visual identity of the piece was crafted by artist Daarken, known for a high-fantasy style characterized by visceral detail and somber palettes. In depicting Torgaar, the artist focused on a sense of overwhelming, predatory scale to emphasize the card's ability to reduce a player's life total instantly. The design was well-received by the player base for its unique approach to life-manipulation mechanics, quickly becoming a staple in Commander formats where its ability to reset a battlefield dynamic remains a notable strategic feature.
