Where it came from
Torment of Hailfire was originally released as a rare sorcery in the 2017 Magic: The Gathering expansion Hour of Devastation, set on the plane of Amonkhet. The card was designed as a scalable mana-sink, reflecting the theme of the set's antagonist, the Elder Dragon Nicol Bolas, who sought to punish those who failed his trials. The promo version, marked with the collector number 77p, features the iconic, bleak artwork by Chase Stone, depicting the devastating, ritualistic magic associated with the set's narrative arc.
The card was received with immediate interest due to its unique mechanics, which force opponents to sacrifice permanents, discard cards, or lose life, effectively creating a 'hailfire' of damage that scales with the amount of mana spent. While initially viewed as a niche high-cost spell, it gained significant notoriety in the Commander format for its ability to close games decisively. The promo iteration, often distributed through tournament play or specialized promotional programs, remains a sought-after version for its distinct border and prestige within the game's competitive community.
