Tormented Angel

Tormented Angel originally debuted in the Urza's Destiny expansion, released in 1999 as the conclusion to the Urza block. This set was notable for its exploration of complex mechanics and high-power artifacts, fitting into a narrative arc that focused on the artificer Urza's preparation for a Phyrexian invasion. The card was designed to offer players a repeatable, though mana-intensive, way to return creatures from the graveyard to the battlefield, a mechanic that defined much of the white color identity during that era of the game.

The card’s illustration was provided by artist Greg Staples, whose work often captures a sense of melancholic fantasy. His depiction of the angel reflects the card’s thematic struggle between celestial imagery and the inherent costs of its necromantic ability. When it was reprinted as part of The List—a curated selection of past cards included in modern booster packs—it served as a nostalgic nod for long-term players, maintaining its original mechanical identity while introducing it to a new generation of collectors.
