Where it came from
Tormented Hero was originally printed as an uncommon creature in the 2013 expansion Theros, a set heavily inspired by Greek mythology and the concept of heroic struggle. As a human warrior with the heroic ability, which rewards players for targeting their own creatures with spells, it served as a fundamental aggressive tool in the set's Limited and Constructed environments. The card reflects the grim aesthetic of the Theros underworld, emphasizing the character's cursed resilience.
The Friday Night Magic version, released in 2014, features distinct alternate art by Greg Staples. These promotional cards were distributed as prizes to participants in local game store events, serving as a way to reward community engagement and player loyalty. Staples’ illustration moves away from the standard card frame to emphasize a darker, more detailed portrait of the hero, highlighting the moody, high-contrast style that characterizes many premium promotional releases for the game.
