Torrent of Souls

Torrent of Souls was originally released in the 2008 Shadowmoor expansion, designed as a hybrid-mana spell that blurred the lines between red and black archetypes. The card was conceptualized to provide a late-game recursive threat, allowing players to resurrect a creature from the graveyard while simultaneously boosting their board state with a temporary power and haste buff. It reflects the set's thematic focus on the hybrid identity and the aggressive, synergy-driven mechanics of the time.

This specific iteration appeared in Modern Masters 2017, a set curated to provide players with access to staple cards from across the modern era of Magic: The Gathering. The card features updated frame treatment consistent with the set's aesthetic standards, retaining its original illustration by Greg Staples. Staples' work is known for its moody, visceral style, which fits the dark, cyclical nature of the card's effect, and the reprint was largely received as a functional inclusion for draft environments and specialized graveyard-recursion decks.
