Soul Manipulation

Soul Manipulation was originally introduced in the Alara block of Magic: The Gathering, specifically within the 2009 Conflux expansion. It was designed as a blue and black multicolored spell meant to embody the mechanics of the Grixis shard, which focused on the intersection of graveyard interaction and creature utility. By allowing a player to both return a creature from the graveyard to their hand and counter a creature spell, the card offered a versatile utility tool for control-oriented decks of that era.

For the Modern Masters 2017 release, the card received updated art by Carl Critchlow, a long-time contributor to the game known for his distinct, expressive fantasy style. This reprint aimed to provide players with necessary graveyard recursion and interaction within the limited format of the set. Critchlow’s illustration reimagined the act of magical manipulation with a sharper, more contemporary aesthetic that aligned with the high-contrast visual identity of the Modern Masters series, helping the card remain a functional staple for players drafting the set.
