Where it came from
Torsten, Founder of Benalia was introduced in the Dominaria United Commander set, released in 2022 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Magic: The Gathering. As a legendary figure within the lore of the setting, Torsten serves as the historical patriarch of the nation of Benalia. The character's inclusion in this expansion connects the modern gameplay experience to the deep, decades-long history of the Dominaria plane, specifically highlighting the founding myths of its most prominent human civilization.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, a long-time contributor to the game known for his expressive and atmospheric style. Voss aimed to capture the gravitas of a legendary statesman and military leader, grounding Torsten in the established aesthetic of Benalia’s storied past. Upon release, the card was received as a flavorful addition for commander players interested in themed decks centered on historic figures and the mechanics of the Selesnya color identity.
