Where it came from
Totem-Guide Hartebeest was released in 2010 as part of the Rise of the Eldrazi expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set focused on a conflict between the inhabitants of the plane of Zendikar and the ancient, cosmic Eldrazi entities, with the Hartebeest designed as a common utility card intended to support white-aligned decks by searching for specific enchantments. This mechanic reflected the set's emphasis on finding key components to survive the escalating threat of the Eldrazi.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Jesper Ejsing, who captured the creature in a static, grounded posture that emphasizes its role as a sturdy, reliable guide. The design choice aimed to evoke the naturalistic yet slightly mystical aesthetic of Zendikar’s fauna. Upon release, the card was well-regarded by players for its efficiency in limited formats, where its ability to tutor for powerful aura or enchantment spells provided critical consistency during the fast-paced gameplay of the era.
