Where it came from
Totem-Guide Hartebeest was released in the 2015 Magic: The Gathering set Magic Origins. This set was designed to explore the backstories of five iconic planeswalkers, serving as a narrative bridge that showcased the transformative moments of their lives before they achieved their power. Within the set, this creature was included as a common-rarity white card, intended to provide utility in the Limited format by allowing players to search their libraries for enchantment cards.
The card features artwork by Greg Staples, a long-time illustrator for the franchise known for his moody and textured fantasy style. The design emphasizes the creature's role as a spiritual or guidance-focused beast, fitting the mechanical theme of fetching enchantments. Upon its release, it was regarded as a functional, balanced piece of the set's ecosystem, designed primarily to support enchantment-heavy strategies in draft and sealed play rather than competitive constructed formats.
