Where it came from
Training Center was released in 2020 as part of the Commander Legends expansion, a set specifically engineered for the popular multiplayer Commander format. The card belongs to a cycle of 'crowd lands'—dual lands that provide two colors of mana and enter the battlefield untapped if the player has two or more opponents. This mechanic was intentionally designed to facilitate faster, more interactive gameplay in social, multi-player settings, filling a mechanical niche for players who frequently engaged in group games.
The art was commissioned by Wizards of the Coast and illustrated by Titus Lunter. Lunter’s work for the set leaned into the high-fantasy aesthetic of the Magic: The Gathering multiverse, aiming to evoke a sense of a grand, scholarly academy where mages practice their craft. The design was well-received by the player base for its utility in color-fixing, quickly becoming a staple in competitive and casual Commander deck-building alike.
