Where it came from
Transmogrify was released in June 2020 as part of the Core Set 2021 for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It functions as a functional reprint of the card Polymorph, originally printed in the 1997 set Mirage, designed to bring a classic effect into the modern competitive environment. The card allows players to exile a creature and reveal cards from the top of their library until a new creature is revealed, effectively acting as a high-risk, high-reward engine for deploying powerful threats onto the battlefield.
The artwork for this version was illustrated by Jason Rainville, who leaned into a visceral and surreal aesthetic to capture the essence of biological alteration. The visual direction emphasizes the chaotic transformation of the subject, aligning with the card's mechanical flavor of metamorphosis. Upon release, the card saw immediate play in various competitive formats, particularly in combo-oriented decks that sought to cheat massive creatures into play by minimizing the number of creature cards included in the deck.
