Provenance

Where it came from

The Transmogrifying Licid was released in 1998 as part of the Exodus expansion for the Magic: The Gathering card game. As the third and final set in the Rath Cycle, Exodus introduced several complex mechanics, including the Licid creature type. These cards were designed to blur the lines between creature and enchantment, allowing them to sacrifice their mobility to provide static buffs or abilities to other permanents on the battlefield.

The card was illustrated by Jim Nelson, whose work was highly regarded during this era for its distinct, painterly aesthetic. Nelson leaned into the biological, shifting nature of the creature, creating a visual that emphasized the surreal transformation inherent to the Licid mechanic. While the card is remembered today primarily as a mechanical curiosity, it remains a notable example of the experimental design philosophy that characterized the late 1990s era of the game.
