Provenance

Where it came from

Treasure Hunt was originally printed in the Worldwake expansion of Magic: The Gathering in 2010. Designed by the internal Wizards of the Coast team, the card was intended to capture the flavor of archaeological exploration within the Zendikar setting, mechanically rewarding players for building decks with a high density of land cards. The art for the original printing was provided by artist Dan Dos Santos, who leaned into the adventurous, Indiana Jones-esque aesthetic of the set's exploration theme.

The version from the Commander 2018 set features the same fundamental design and art, repurposed for a preconstructed deck environment. Commander 2018 focused on distinct deck themes, and Treasure Hunt was included to provide utility and card advantage for players utilizing deck-thinning strategies. Upon its release, it became a staple in niche deck-building circles, particularly in formats where the ability to draw a large volume of cards by revealing lands is highly efficient.
