Where it came from
Trial and Error was released as part of the Mystery Booster Playtest Cards at MagicFest Richmond in 2019. This subset of cards was designed to emulate the chaotic, experimental spirit of R&D playtest documents, intentionally featuring stark white borders, monochrome aesthetics, and a unique look that diverged from standard Magic: The Gathering sets.
The card was designed to explore unconventional mechanics, specifically utilizing the split-card format to represent a literal trial-and-error process. By allowing players to choose between its two modes—one focused on deck manipulation and the other on resource recovery—it captured the whimsical, high-risk nature of the design team's internal testing environment where balance is often secondary to mechanical discovery.
