Bear with Set's Mechanic

Bear with Set's Mechanic originated as a component of the Mystery Booster playtest set, unveiled at MagicFest Richmond in late 2019. These cards were designed by Wizards of the Coast developers as a humorous, experimental internal project intended to showcase mechanics that never made it into official expansions or to push the boundaries of card design for a draft-only environment. They were never meant for standard tournament play, serving instead as a whimsical celebration of the game's design history.

The card features an illustration by Magali Villeneuve, a prominent artist in the Magic: The Gathering community. The design is intentionally meta, referencing the game's design process by utilizing a template that acknowledges the very nature of playtest cards. Upon their release, the cards were well-received by the player base for their self-aware humor and the unique, chaotic draft experience they facilitated, ultimately becoming sought-after curiosities for collectors of Magic’s more unusual ephemera.
