Provenance

Where it came from

The Imaginary Friends card was produced as part of the Mystery Booster playtest series released by Wizards of the Coast in 2019. These cards were designed to be draftable experiments, intentionally pushing the boundaries of traditional Magic: The Gathering mechanics. They were included as a surprise element in the Mystery Booster packs, serving as a nostalgic and humorous tribute to the game's long history of design exploration.

The card features the hallmark 'playtest' aesthetic, characterized by a stark, handwritten style and an absence of standard card art, reflecting the raw environment of R&D prototyping. Designed to mimic the feel of an internal developer's scratchpad, the card was received by the community as a whimsical collector's item that highlights the playful, iterative process behind set development.
