Where it came from
Tromokratis was released in 2014 as part of the Born of the Gods expansion for Magic: The Gathering, later appearing as a reprint in the Commander Legends set under collector number 408. Designed as a legendary Kraken, the card reflects the set's thematic focus on the Greek-inspired mythology of the plane of Theros. It was intended to function as a powerful late-game threat in limited formats, utilizing a unique defensive mechanic that makes it difficult for opponents to block effectively.
The illustration was created by artist Tyler Jacobson, who was tasked with visualizing a colossal, terrifying oceanic entity emerging from the depths. Jacobson’s design emphasizes the creature's massive scale and bioluminescent features, which align with the set's aesthetic of epic, god-level monsters. Upon release, the card was received as a flavorful, albeit high-mana, commander option, frequently praised by players for its distinct visual presence and its representation of the formidable oceanic hazards characteristic of the Theros setting.
