Where it came from
Tromokratis was released as a promotional card for the Magic: The Gathering expansion Born of the Gods, which debuted in early 2014. As part of the Theros block, the set drew heavily from classical Greek mythology, reimagining the legendary kraken as a formidable sea monster terrorizing the coastal cities of the plane. This specific promo version, bearing the collector number 55★, features unique alternate art and the distinct set symbol associated with the expansion's prerelease events.
The card was illustrated by Chris Rahn, a prolific artist for the franchise known for his cinematic and textured approach to fantasy creatures. Rahn focused on emphasizing the colossal scale of the kraken, capturing the creature emerging from the ocean to threaten a vessel. The design sought to balance the narrative intensity of a mythological monster with the complex mechanical requirements of the game, ultimately receiving praise from players for its striking visual presence and thematic alignment with the set's maritime horror motifs.
