Where it came from
The Tropical Island card from the 1993 Collectors' Edition was produced by Wizards of the Coast as part of a non-tournament-legal boxed set. This set was designed to allow players to experience the cards from the initial print runs of Magic: The Gathering, specifically the Alpha and Beta sets, which had already become prohibitively expensive and scarce by the end of 1993. The cards are easily distinguished from their tournament-legal counterparts by their square corners and gold-bordered backs.
The artwork for Tropical Island was created by Christopher Rush, one of the most prolific and celebrated early illustrators for the game. His design sought to capture the essence of a dual-land environment, blending the aesthetic of a coastal paradise with the functional mechanical requirements of the card. While the Collectors' Edition was initially viewed as a niche product for casual play and preservation, it has since become a significant historical artifact for collectors, reflecting the early design language and artistic direction of Magic's formative years.
