Where it came from
Trostani Discordant was released in the 2018 Magic: The Gathering set Guilds of Ravnica, marking the return to the plane of Ravnica. The character Trostani represents the Selesnya Conclave, one of the game's ten iconic two-color guilds, serving as the collective consciousness of their spiritual leader. This card was designed as a powerful mythic rare creature intended to reinforce the Selesnya identity of creature-token strategies and board-state stabilization within the competitive meta of the time.
The card was illustrated by Chase Stone, an artist frequently commissioned for his painterly, high-fantasy style. Stone focused on depicting the triad of dryads in a way that balanced their ethereal, divine nature with the organic, overgrown aesthetic of the Selesnya Conclave. Upon release, the card was well-received by players for its impact on the battlefield and its thematic alignment with the lore of the set, effectively capturing the tension inherent in the guild's search for harmony amidst the discord of Ravnica.
