Where it came from
True Polymorph was released in 2021 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set Adventures in the Forgotten Realms, the first full set to crossover with Dungeons & Dragons. This specific promo version, identifiable by its collector number 80s, features unique borderless art that leans into the high-fantasy aesthetic of the tabletop game. It serves as a mechanical translation of the ninth-level D&D spell, allowing a player to transform a creature or object into another creature, capturing the transformative essence of the original source material.
The card illustration was crafted by artist Lie Setiawan, who utilized a vivid, painterly style to depict the chaotic and wondrous nature of magical transmutation. In the competitive Magic community, the card was received as a flavorful and potent tool for blue-aligned decks, praised for its versatility in both Commander and other formats. Its release marked a significant moment for the game's expansion into established intellectual properties, blending D&D lore with traditional card mechanics.
