Where it came from
True Polymorph was released in 2021 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set Adventures in the Forgotten Realms, which marked the first time the game featured a full crossover with the Dungeons & Dragons tabletop role-playing system. This specific printing, marked as collector number 80p, was issued as a promotional card, utilizing the 'rulebook' showcase art style designed to evoke the aesthetic of classic D&D monster manuals.
The illustration was created by artist Titus Lunter, who was tasked with capturing the essence of the spell’s transformative magic within the specific visual constraints of the retro-inspired set. The design choice was intended to ground the card in the nostalgia of 1970s and 80s gaming literature, and it was well-received by players for its thematic cohesion and distinct visual departure from standard Magic card frames.
